Honduras: the most violent country in the world and one of the worst places for journalists to work, the original banana
republic, twisted and misshapen by a recent coup, by drug trafficking, gang violence and corruption. It is also home to
some of the most hopeful projects in the wold, supported by Fairtrade premiums. Dozens of cooperatives across the
country are certified by the Fairtrade system and are improving the lives of their farmers with health and education
projects. There are schools for farmers’ children. There is ‘Feminine Coffee’ produced by women-only groups of
farmers. And there are innovations on adaptation to climate change as the region is beset by drought and plant
diseases related to the increase in humidity that comes with rising temperature.
