There are 88 ghats in Varanasi that allow people to access the auspicious Ganga river. These ancient ghats were rebuilt during 1700 AD when the city was under Maratha rule. These days Shindes, Peswas, Holkars and Bhonsles patronize the ghats. Many of the ghats are associated with mythological legends and form a lifeline to the people of Varanasi and thousands of tourists. On special occasions like Makar Sankranti, Vasant Panchami, Dev Deepawali etc. the ghats swell with devotees who arrive in hordes to take a holy dip in the Ganga river.
