RANKIN . His favourite portraits of all time PETE DOHERTY I took this image for Elle magazine. Pete is a very intelligent and interesting guy. He's very charismatic - when he gives you his attention, you feel like the only person in the room. He has a real love for cats, so we got a few kittens in for hire and photographed him with them. Then he smashed up a guitar for me. It was all quite surreal as I think a lot of his life must be?  CAROLINE SAULNIER BEAUTY I am currently working on a book with a seriously talented makeup artist Caroline Saulnier. She is just amazing: a true artist. This is one of her creations. I love how she works with the face, and uses it as her canvas but doesn't let it constrain her. The book will be out later in the year. EVA HERZIGOVA Eva is a supermodel in every sense. A consummate professional, and a very powerful woman. She knows her own mind, and she absolutely controls the set. When she is in front of the camera, she owns the image. As the photographer, you are just chasing after her...! KATE WINSLET I love this shot. It was taken just before the time when she went really stellar, but she was already a well-known and respected actress. I always try and have fun on set and mess around. This image captures one of those moments. I was probably pulling the same face back at her! This image was a kind of outtake from the shoot. I really loved the image and was waiting for a opportunity to exhibit it. Open was the perfect chance. DEREK JACOBI I’ve always admired him. He’s such a beautiful man. In this shoot I wanted him to look like a fashion icon – he ended up looking like a supermodel! QUENTIN CRISP I was a massive fan of his book The Naked Civil Servant. So I was excited to meet and photograph him in NY. Though when I met him he was quite frail. He told me a great story about why he loved New York. He said the he loved it because the people are so friendly and I said in what way and he replied” When you wait to cross the road at lights, by the time you've crossed the road with someone you know their life story and they know yours. In England people wouldn’t even acknowledge you”  SAM NEILL I shot Sam Neill for Premiere Magazine I think. I really don’t remember much about the shoot – apart from him being very friendly and easy going. He’s such a great actor but sometimes you just don’t connect in that way! TONY BLAIR Shortly after Britain invaded Iraq in March 2003,I was asked to photograph the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair for the Financial Times Magazine front cover. It’s funny with celebrities, you assume you know them, but I didn’t get any of that Tony Blair charm I’d seen on tv. It was all very get on with it. He was giving me nothing at all. He was just very distant, and I kind of thought he’d be charming. I think it looks like a passport shot. To me, he looks blank, though I suppose he had a lot more on his mind than a silly photo shoot. BJORK This shot was taken for an edition of Dazed & Confused that Paul Smith was guest editing. The image was a happy accident; some wind just blew her hair in her face. Then it ended up being the cover! RICHARD ASHCROFT This was taken for an early Dazed & Confused shoot. The fashion editor at the time Katie Grand really fancied him and spent most of the day trying to get him to take his top off. After a lot of persuasion he did, very reluctantly. It became quite an iconic picture, gracing many teenage girls walls at the time.
