MICHAEL BIACH   To commission Michael or to request prints of his work: www.michaelbiach.wordpress.com DECEMBER 2012 BACK ISSUE Kasmauski has built her career on close observation of people. She specializes in bringing a human face to the impact of science and social developments. Kasmauski started her photojournalism career at the Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Norfolk, Virginia.  She became a contract photographer for National Geographic where she photographed groundbreaking coverage on viruses, women's issues, aging, emerging diseases, migrating workforce, immigration and other critical topics. Most recently, she developed a visual project on nursing for Emory University.  In 2009 she received the first ever Getty Grant for Good from Getty Images to document the process of non-profits effecting social change.  In 2011-12 she was the Knight Fellow for Ohio University's School of Visual Communication. She presently consults for Catholic Relief Services.  Her books, "Impact: From the Front lines of Global Health," and "Nurse: A World of Care," were both nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.  Her international coverage on radiation received top honors in the Pictures of the Year.   A skilled story developer and journalist, Kasmauski has created media outreach projects for non-profits. She has developed workshops for George Washington University and the Maine Media Workshops.  She sits on the boards of non-profits working with poverty relief and community building in Southeast Asia and in Africa. Born on a U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, Japan to a Japanese mother and American father, Kasmauski grew familiar with multi-cultural relationships early in life. At the University of Michigan she majored in Anthropology and Religion, an academic foundation well suited to her career as a photojournalist where assignments have taken her to dozens of countries on six continents. She has Masters from Ohio University's School of Visual Communications New York based (b.1965 London) has worked as a freelance photographer and writer for over 14 years, focusing on under reported stories about people living on the margins of society and in places of conflict around the world. He has won a number of international awards including the Lucie's 'People Photographer of the Year -2010', His work has been widely published in newspapers and magazines including the New York Times, The Virginia Quarterly Review and Newsweek, and his images have been exhibited in the USA, UK, Europe and China. He was made Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society - London in 2009 for his photographic work and cultural expeditions. Photojournalist Lynn Johnson is known for her intense, sensitive work. Dividing her time between assignments for National Geographic and various foundations, Johnson has traveled from Siberia to Zambia and photographed celebrities including Tiger Woods, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Mister Rogers and the entire Supreme Court. With her Leicas, she has climbed the radio antenna atop Chicago's Hancock Tower and dangled from helicopters in Antarctica. Yet her favorite assignments have been emotionally demanding stories about ordinary people; a family struggling with AIDS (Life), the death of an African-American coach in Amish country (Sports Illustrated), native Hawaiians who protect traditional ways (NG), the impact of zoonotic diseases around the world (NG). Her vision is subtle. She invites the viewer to find the meaning in the frame. Her shooting style is equally low key allowing her subjects to reveal themselves to the camera. The photographs she strives for are compassionate. After 30 years of practicing photography, she sees her personal work moving from that of an observer to advocate. As a Knight Fellow in the School of Visual Communications at Ohio University, Johnson completed a rigorous program that included her Masters thesis, an exhibit about the impact of hate crimes on American society, Hate Kills. Perhaps the most rewarding aspect of her fellowship was the teaching component that allowed her to share her passion and commitment with other students in the Visual Studies Program, helping to develop the talents and ethics of a new generation of photographers. Johnson first earned a B.A. in Photographic Illustration and Photojournalism at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1975. After graduating, she was a Staff Photographer at The Pittsburgh Press for seven years before beginning her freelance career as a contract photographer for Black Star then Aurora Photos. She is currently represented by the National Geographic Image Collection. For two decades Nick Smith was a magazine editor in the UK. He ended up in the big chair at Geographical - the magazine of the Royal Geographical Society - and during his three years on the title he won the coveted PPA 'Independent Magazine Editor of the Year' award, to go with a stack of other magazine industry awards he'd picked up over the years. The problem for Nick was that editing magazines is a desk job and you don't get to see much of the world from behind an editor's green eyeshade, much less photograph it. So in 2006 he left his last ever 'grown-up job' to become a full-time freelance photographer and writer. His work has since appeared in newspapers such as the Daily Telegraph as well as many travel, lifestyle and photography magazines and websites.  2010 saw the publication of his first book - Travels in the World of Books - described by Alexander McCall Smith as “a triumph.”Nick is a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in London and the Explorers Club in New York. Apratim Saha, being a senior executive of a pharmaceutical company in Kolkota, finds very little time to enjoy his childhood hobby of photojournalism which is now enriched with more than 20 years of experience in this field of art.  This has however not stopped his works from being published in many magazines, newspapers and websites including online publications of various humanitarian, educational religious organizations. Recently he became a member of National Geographic Stock Photography Born in 1983 in Ukraine. Since 2006 has engaged in professional photography. Dondyuk has collaborated with organisations such as: World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe (WHO/Europe), Foundation for "Development of Ukraine" (Ukraine), Kherson charitable foundations "Mongoose" (Ukraine). He provides images for: Ask Images (France), EPA (Germany), Focus Picture (Russia), Metaphor Images (Australia). His work has been widely published in magazines and newspapers across Russia, (including Russian Reporter), Ukraine (including KyivWeekly), Berliner Zeitung (Germany), Helsingin Sanomat (Finland) amongst others Michael Biach is an Austrian photojournalist beginner who has traveled numerous countries for more than decade before he started to document his experiences with a camera two years ago.  Since then his major photographic interest lies in documenting social issues, humanrights activities and working conditions. “I am fascinated in documenting other people’s lives, their living and working conditions, simple moments of everyday life. I always treat people with respect, try to never bother them or photograph them out of a voyeuristic view. If you are respectful, if you first get in touch with people and try to talk to   them, to understand them, before you grab your camera and do your photographs, then your images will be honest. I always try to improve my ability in empathy, so I am sure my pictures will get more authentic.” Michael lives and works in Vienna, Austria. He is continuously trying to evolve his skills as a freelance photojournalist and is always interested in making his work available to a broader audience.
