From his home in North Carolina, Burk has many new projects, books, and exhibitions in the works. Burk is in many museums and private collections worldwide, and is represented in New York by the Laurence Miller Gallery. "Photography started for me at fifteen when my uncle gave me his old darkroom equipment. At the age of twenty, I began my professional career as an on-the-run news photographer, covering local events for newspapers. Soon I also started to work as an assistant to high end photographers on commercial photo shoots. Feeling more and more the personal need to focus on socio-political issues, I drove in 2002 to Sarajevo to cover a personal documentary story on daily life. Ever since more international personal photo series have followed. In 2007 I had the honour of becoming one of the 12 participants of World Press Photo's annual Joop Swart Masterclass.   My photos have appeared in magazines and trade journals, adverts and government publications, nationally and internationally. Organizations such as UNICEF, CARE International and AMREF Flying Doctors have sent me abroad some 25 times to photograph their projects and campaigns. My work includes portrait series, landscape series, and photo essays in which both come together." Marieke van der Velden, the Netherlands “Photography is my life. One of the most powerful tools in the world is a camera, it has been used to bring down dictators, change society and influence change. I strive to create vibrant, interesting and unusual images of the world we live. My life mantra is ‘living my life to make a difference” and l make the difference through my work as a social documentary photographer. Amidst the violence that followed the 2007 election in Kenya, l falsified my identity and risked my life to photograph the atrocities my countrymen were inflicting on one another. In 2009 l disrupted a live, nationally broadcast presidential speech to protest the violent political system. I was beaten and arrested. "Your photography is absolutely stunning and tells an important and powerful story for the world to hear", Hillary Clinton, the USA Secretary of State said in a 2009 letter she wrote to me. My work has appeared in virtually all the important newspapers in the world. I have been named the CNN Africa Photojournalist of the year 2008 and 2010 among many other awards.” Freelancer.
