Woodstock
Woodstock
by Burk Uzzle
Very soon at Woodstock it was apparent that American culture was changing at that very moment. On the
hillsides, at the lake, in the behavior of the huge crowd was the poetry of a different America. My picture of
the Ercolines at dawn, chosen for the Album cover, spoke to the awareness of this particular population’s
statement.
Working only for myself, having declined magazine assignments, freed me to respond to the importance of
non-importance. The magic of people and water, hillsides, and whatever all that stuff in the air is about,
created a gentle and loving power. Great as the music was, to see tenderness transcend the long shadow of
the Vietnam war and the nasty politics of the decade, was the gift of people allowing themselves to be very
beautiful people.
