New, New Delhi by Findlay Kember I arrived in New Delhi a decade ago. In my early years here, little of the fabric of the city appeared to change. Ambassador cars and Blue-line buses dominated the roads, and queues formed outside PCO booths and Nirulas. With an economy on the rise, construction projects slowly gathered momentum as shopping malls and fly-overs became new features in the changing cityscape. Then the great civil engineering project - The Delhi Metro - started to burrow its way through the foundations of the city, appearing at ground level occasionally to remind and reassure that out of sight, progress was continuing. The city and its people were transforming. Over the period of a year in 2008, I set myself the task of chronicling the changes taking place in the city before me: not to comment, criticize or conclude, but just to observe.  I set out to record experiences which I thought were part of the changing face of the city; among them were shopping malls, fashion shows, construction projects and, the aforementioned Metro. As time went on during my journey in and around "new new delhi', I was aware of not only physical changes but also attitudinal - Delhiwallahs appeared to be embracing these new physical accoutrements of life with an infectious enthusiasm.  Shoppers were packing malls, mobile telephones became inseparable from hands, and sleek foreign automobiles cruised along freshly laid tarmacadam towards dance floors reverberating with the latest beats from across the planet. In these images I have sought to illustrate my experiences within this latest incarnation of the city. From the window cleaner tentatively leaning towards panels of glass adorning a soon-to-be-finished construction, to the wine quaffers of The Delhi Wine Club, and the commuters crossing Moolchand, each form a part of my interpretation of the culture and the city that we call home. The project continues to evolve. An Indian construction worker cleans glass panels on a new building in Gurgaon on the outskirts of New Delhi on October 31, 2008.
