Indonesia
by Roy del Vecchio
I always had a fascination for Indonesia. Maybe because growing up in The Netherlands unconsciously gave me so many references to the former Dutch colony: the language, the food and the people were somehow already familiar to me. The archipelago has more than 17.000 islands.  This photo essay contains photos from Java, Bali and Sulawesi. On Java, a local NGO asked me to visit Galur and Ciliwung, two major slums in Jakarta. The conditions in those areas are poor, but one thing I noticed is that the local people are, overall, positive about their lives and future. The simple pleasures are treasured and a sense of community is very important. I have traveled multiple times to the country.  The last trip was in 2011, but was definitely not the last.
