Photographer Arlene Gottfried first came across the Eternal Light
Community Singers, a New York gospel choir, at a gospel fest held in
an abandoned gas station in New York’s Lower East Side.
Immediately drawn to the group as a fascinating subject, she spent
four months photographing at rehearsals and at services throughout the
city. But as time passed, she got drawn even further in and herself
became a member of the choir. For five years, she joined in every
aspect of the life of this dedicated community of individuals. These
photographs are a vivid portrait of that life; an intense and vibrant
document taken by someone trusted ad valued as a full member of the
group. As a result, they are a truly unique record of the life of a gospel
choir. Gottfried is no outsider but is involved in every aspect of the lives
of the members – their grief at the death of a child or their joy and
enthusiasm as they head out on the road once again for another concert.
