Georgia
by Maciej Grzybowski
Georgia is a country situated in the south of the Caucasus region.  It borders Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey. Until April 1991, Georgia was a part of the USSR before declaring independence after a national referendum. After independence there were several conflicts inside the country. In 1991 local authorities of the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast (administrative region) declared independence from Georgia, creating the Republic of South Ossetia.  Following this, in 1992 there was an armed conflict between Georgia and the autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, which also aspirated to be independent. In 2008 there was second wave of conflicts between Georgia and Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Russia signed a pact with Abkhazia and South Ossetia about friendship, cooperation and mutual help. Russia also decided to support the Abkhazians and Ossetians militarily, which allowed them to be almost independent of Georgia, although Abkhazia and Ossetia are still regions that are not considered to be countries by majority of the world. In spite of many reforms and solving the problem with corruption, Georgia is still dealing with an economic crisis. Its economic growth is much slower than that of neighbouring Armenia or Azerbaijan but Georgians, despite their difficulties, are still friendly, open and spontaneously hospitable. The following photograps are all untitled.
