Chinese Opera Season Bangkok
by Jeremy Horner
Each year in Bangkok, the end of November heralds the beginning of the Chinese Opera season.  An ever dwindling number of dedicated troupes perform on stages they assemble themselves in a series of temples and shrines tucked away in and around Bangkok's Chinatown district. Sleeping beneath the stage and living like gypsies, a strong sense of community is evident amongst the performers. Often with children and babies in-tow three generations of performers can be found in a performing troupe. Financing the operation is precarious with local businessmen largely sponsoring the performances.
