VaranasiThe oldest, continually inhabited city in India
Varanasi is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities. Situated on the banks of the River Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi is among India's most revered religious destinations. Two rivers, Varuna and Assi, which meet here, give the city its name. Varanasi is renowned for its bathing ghats along the banks of the Ganga River. These ghats are filled by pilgrims hoping to wash themselves free from their sins. The city’s architecture has a distinctly British style which can be seen in its government buildings and bridges. Despite the endless stream of tourists and pilgrims, residents still live a conventional existence here.
