Gypsyland
by Irena Baker
My name is Irena Baker.  Originally I am from Lithuania. I started photography about 6 years ago and last year I held my first exhibition.  After the exhibition I was given a few medium format cameras by an old family friend on the proviso that I continued with my photography work.  So I began work with my Hasselblad camera and others. I found myself on a workshop in Ireland where I met the photohtapher Joseph-Philippe Bevillard and we began photographing Irish travellers. I was very exited to work with them. "The gestures in front of the camera contain neither accusations, nor desires. All they have is certainty, wisdom and recognition. Peace. These people are beyond their Gypsyness. It is merely an ID card.  A brown stamp that keeps and detains them in Gypsyland. But they are more than this: they are proud, happy, exhausted, sad, in love. If only we knew just this much about them, the days of Gypsyland would be counted …" – György Kerény
