When a Hindu octogenarian next door neighbour passes away it becomes mandatory to join the procession to the crematorium. The custom of carrying the dead has undergone considerable changes in recent times. Traditionally, it was compulsory to carry the dead body upon a rickety bamboo stretcher but nowadays, in most cases, the body of the deceased is carried in an air conditioned hearse. I spent a day at a traditional funeral at the Hatishala Crematorium at Baidyabati  to witness and chronicle old rituals.
