He studied the guitar when he was in Japan, but once he went to the Philippines on his summer break with his friends and witnessed the tragic situation of the lifestyle there, he started to reassess his own life. In 2006, curiosity set off to Afghanistan to see what was going on that side of the world. During his first stay, he met photographers and journalists that ended up changing his life. As he witnessed their photographs, he was so staggered that he bought his first camera as soon as he returned from his trip. Later on, he would return to Afghanistan twice more to take more photographs. He realized that photography has the power to make change, so he decided to study Journalism more seriously, and to move to the United States. He made the change of switching what he holds in his hands from a guitar to a camera.

Colin O’Brien www.colinobrien.co.uk 1940 - 2016 Colin O'Brien's photographs of working class life in London in the 50s and 60s and onwards are reminiscent of the early photojournalist approach published by magazines such as 'Picture Post'.  For O'Brien the street becomes his stage and the passing scene is compared to scenes in a play where people talk, dance, mime and perform to an unseen audience.  For a previous exhibition, Art Critic, Joanna Pitman wrote in the Times newspaper that “the photographs possessed eloquence, grace, drama and visual wit”, saying that “the photographer had a remarkable eye for the world around him”, comparing his work with Roger Mayne, Bill Brandt, Cartier-Bresson and Thurston Hopkins.  Pitman went on to say that “O'Brien's work is structured with a classical sense of composition and a powerful implied narrative, neatly resolved”.
