The Stories Behind the Photographs
Steve McCurry Untold: The Stories Behind the Photographs is the only book to tell
the fascinating stories behind the most iconic images of this world-renowned, multi-
award winning photographer.
For over thirty years, Steve McCurry has not only kept every copy of the magazine
or newspaper that first published his pictures, but also his own personal journals,
train tickets, maps, press passes, itineraries, thematic notes and even restaurant
receipts. Amassed and hidden for decades, they capture the inspiring moments,
technical difficulties, and even a couple of arrests that lie behind the finished works.
Across fourteen assignments, from his earliest in Afghanistan in 1979 to trips to
Vietnam in 2007, each chapter includes McCurry’s first-hand account in specially
commissioned essays, a section of ephemera and personal photographs from his
private archive, and full-page plates at the back. Previously unseen, these
documents and archival material truly unearth and bring to life the extraordinary
tales behind over 200 of McCurry’s photographs,
