Sleepers
by Javier Arcenillas
Calcutta’s sleepers.
A third of the population of India lives on city streets harrassed by the cold and wet, the rats, crows and
garbage.
As you walk late at night, in the dark corners of the streets, you find bodies lying, filing the holes
in porches, walkways and stairs.
Whole families huddled together in the dirt, nowhere else to go. The lack of property, houses and extreme
poverty of these people sleeping on the streets is part of the usual nocturnal landscape.
