Sugar Plantation
Dominican Republic
by Carmen Ballve
Twelve years ago I moved with my family to the Dominican Republic. I lived close to a sugar plantation and for five
years I visited the fields and the bateys (small compounds where the workers and their families live during the harvest
and the off season). The majority of these workers come from Haiti, fleeing the poverty of their own country in search
of a better life. I started to get involved in the daily life of these families and in their struggle to find hope in the face of
hunger and poverty.
